A bitter and foggy Wednesday night at Meadowbank Stadium proved to be one of the finest 'days in the sun' for Dorkinian FC. Facing up against Surrey Premier Cup holders, Nottsborough, in the quarter-final of this year's campaign, the 200 strong spectator crowd were treated to an exceptional game of football.
Nottsborough started brightest, and it took a resolute display of defending from the Dorkinian backline to keep the score at 0-0. George Warne was imperious at centre-half, supported ably by Toby Pegge and full-backs Charlie Woodman and Jack Wisbey. Somewhat against the run of play, Dorkinian took the lead on 30 minutes. A beautifully weighted through ball from Andy Sears-Black found Cai La-Trobe Roberts on the edge of the penalty area. With a calm head on his shoulders, La-Trobe Roberts nonchalantly tucked the ball into the far corner. 1-0. Nottsborough came back strongly, and it took a fine save from Henry Warne from a free-kick on the edge of the area to protect the narrow lead at half-time.
The second half saw Dorkinians grow into the game, stringing together some impressive patterns of play despite the relentless Nottsborough press. This time however, it was Nottsborough that scored against the run of play. Capitalising on some uncharacteristically lacklustre defending, a fortuitous clearance struck the Nottsborough captain, and rolled agonisingly into the empty Dorkinian net. 1-1 with 20 to play.
It would have been easy for Dorkinians to go into their shells, but a charge led by the midfield combination of Andy Sears-Black, Tan King and Jonny Walton saw the home side once again take the ascendency. With 10 minutes of the 90 left to play, the same combination of Sears-Black and La-Trobe Roberts produced another moment of quality. A header from Sears-Black bounced awkwardly on the edge of the Nottsborough box, and with a classy pirouet, La-Trobe Roberts spun and fired a low finish that squirmed beneath the goalkeeper and into the net. 2-1.
Despite a number of late forays into the Dorkinian defensive third, the yellow and greens stood firm and held on until the final whistle. Safe passage to the semi-final of the Surrey Premier Cup was assured, concluding one of the most memorable occasions for the Club. A special mention first to Nottsborough, who provided the toughest test of the season, and are also a beacon of strength in amateur football across greater London. The second and final shoutout for the incredible home support that saw a wave of yellow and green composed of family, friends, youth team members and more helping to inspire the team to the win.
