Dorkinians were treated to the highlight of many Amateur teams football calendars as they visited Armoury House for a league fixture versus Honourable Artillery Company.
Accompanied by just shy of fifty travelling fans, the squad were eager to give a better reflection of their quality than in last weeks defeat to the same opposition. From the first minute, this intent was clear to see. Midfielders Joe Pemberton and Tan King set the tone in the middle of the park, supported by the defensive unit.
Despite the perfect playing surface, strings of passes and sustained possession were hard to come by with both teams adopting effective high presses. This pattern continued throughout the first half, with neither side giving their opponent an opportunity to land the first punch.
Both teams would have been relatively happy going into the second half goalless, but both with the knowledge that the first goal would be pivotal. In the end, the introduction of Craig Kingswell to the fray helped break the deadlock as he found himself the right side of the retreating HAC defender before slotting a composed finish home from a tight angle.
Shortly after the lead was doubled, as eventual man of the match Pemberton headed home a beautifully crafted free kick routine involving a pinpoint cross from the equally impressive left-back on the day, Charlie Woodman.
A series of HAC attacks ensued, keeping the rearguard of Dorkinians honest as they were made to fight for a clean sheet. Eventually however the press gauge was released when the tireless Sam Rowley capitalised on a goalkeeping error winning the ball back high up the pitch before slotting home a pile-driver of a finish.
A three nil victory was just what was required following the disappointment of last week, with the impressive result welcomed by the team and their travelling support. A nod to HAC who were excellent hosts, embodying the spirit of amateur football with their hospitality that enabled a very memorable day in the heart of the capital.
