Dorkinians First Team kicked off the new year where they left off with a win on the road against Thorntonians. Back in league action after back-to-back cup games at the end of 2025, they were made to work hard for the three points. A third trip trip to Richardson Evans Memorial Playing Fields brought with it the challenge that everyone will understand, as the narrow pitch and slope create difficulties for all teams that travel there.
Thorntonians pressed very high in the first half, and with the benefit of the slope Dorkinians found it difficult to get in behind consistently. The front three of Liam Hawkins, Ally Wise and Phil Robinson stayed at their task despite the conditions, and were able to fashion a couple of good chances with smart link-up play. Thorntonians had chances of their own, with the first snuffed out by goalkeeper Henry Warne thanks to a brave interception and the second again diverted away from goal after the opposition number nine found himself one-on-one.
As to be expected, the second half flipped the pressure gauge, with Dorkinians controlling possession more patiently and Thorntonians aggressively high press subsiding as they tired. The introduction of substitutes Charlie Kenway out wide, and Josh Riccio in the middle of midfield, helped to renew Dorkinians energy. The second half witnessed less out and out chances, but it was a piece of quality that eventually decided the tie. Substitute Kenway found some space on the left hand side touchline and delivered a pin point cross field ball to his opposite winger Robsinon. Perfectly in his stride, Robinson then delightfully brought the ball down, beating the defender in the same move, and caressed the ball past the ensuring goalkeeper at his near post, much to the jubilation of the travelling support.
Thorntonians then mounted a series of attacks on the Dorkinians box, with free kicks and long throw ins. Holding firm, Dorkinians were able to limit shots on goal and they saw out the remainder of the game to take home a well deserved one-nil victory and three points that returns them to the top spot of the Southern Amateur League Senior Division 1.
Next week they will continue their league campaign, travelling to play last years league title winners West Wickham.
