On Saturday U12 Greens headed into the Final of the SSYFL Plate, facing Petworth Pumas - the team who had just been confirmed as the Division 3 champions ahead of the Greens the weekend before. Matches against Petworth had always been tight, fairly even affairs and that was how things got started in the first half. A last-minute tactical switch at the back meant the Greens were largely able to contain any threats early-on and were also unlucky not to take some chances in front of goal. Petworth began to build pressure and were eventually rewarded with a breakaway goal as half time approached.
The Greens regrouped over the break and came back out with pressure and competitiveness - looking most likely to score throughout the next 30 minutes. Chances went begging at both ends before a free-kick to the Greens late in match was expertly put away by their team captain stepping up from defence. It stayed 1-1 to the end and, after a nerve-shredding shoot-out, Greens held their nerve to seal a 3-1 win on penalties with the last kick of 5. A fantastic day out in the Spring sun for the team, the coaches and the families and just desserts for a fantastic season of football from the Greens!
