A 1s stalwart for over a decade, LJ scribed his thoughts:

“In 2005, Hugh Cannon moved our youth team over from Dorking FC. We had Cannon, Dicko, Reevo, Alex, Shano, Slado, Chris, Rupert, Simpko and others that unfortunately don’t play anymore. Oh, and Morley. These people have brought countless others to the Club: siblings, friends, work colleagues and more. Some come and go, but all enjoy their time at the Club.

My first game was a friendly away at Ockley just before my 16th birthday. I was expecting a cameo appearance, but Parker (1s Captain) told me: “I’ve heard good things, so you’re starting up top with Abbo”. For those that don’t know Abbo, YouTube Bergkamp and you’ll get a good idea! I was a skinny 15-year-old playing my first men’s game with a load of Club legends, and Parker. I was ecstatic.

Scoop and his unmistakable groan were a constant feature on the side-line. At times I really thought we’d be the death of him! He often said, “I just hope I can stay alive long enough to see you boys make it to the AFC Prem”. Unfortunately, Scoop passed before he could see that dream become a reality, but we made it. I felt very proud.

A huge part of my life has been spent at the pokey clubhouse we all love. A real home away from home. A place where you’ll hear the important questions: “is Deano really 26?”, “What’s Morley done this time?” Or “Shock, Hazza didn’t turn up today!”. I’ve seen the club change from crazy ‘stripper’ nights, where you’d end the night having seen more naked men than women, to a far more civilised place. The focus is now on the amazing causes at the heart of many within the family.

It’s hard to pick a favourite memory, when you can look back and think of so many. Winning leagues, cups, personal awards, and seeing close friends do the same. Without wanting to sound cheesy, for me, it’s the people you share those memories with that mean the most. I’ve played football with some of the same guys since I was 5 years old, and the Club helps keep those friendships tight.

As I reminisce, I’m happy with what I’ve helped the club achieve in my time. I hope the Club keeps growing, so my kids and their friends make the great memories we have.”
