Dorkinian U16 Greens Win League!

Dorkinian U16 Green 2 v 1 Brockham Badgers U16
Westhumble, 26/04/2025

Dorkinian U16s Greens dramatically won the South Surrey Division 1 league, beating long time League leaders Brockham Badgers in a tense 'winner takes all' final league game at Westhumble on Saturday 26 April.

Both teams were tied on 37 points heading into the final match, with Brockham's head-to-head record meaning they only needed to avoid defeat to claim the title, whilst Greens had to win.

Both teams started well, but Greens began to dominate possession and got the lead in the 30th minute when striker Freddie, chased a 'lost cause' and expertly kept the ball from crossing the goal line, to play it back to Tom who tee'd up fellow midfielder Sam to calmly find the back of the net.

The goal spurred Badger's on and they deservedly equalised 8 minutes later taking advantage of a rare indecision in Greens defence.

Greens 'keeper Archie then produced a super save rushing off his line to ensure the match remained level at the break.

Greens dominated the second half, playing the better football and controlling possession with the tempo being dictated by central midfielder Thomas.

Left midfielder Oliver, who was a threat all match, thought he'd put Greens ahead with a fantastic finish, for the flag to then cruelly disallow. VAR would have had the lines out....

Greens deservedly took the lead, with 10 minutes remaining. Badgers 'keeper unluckily spilt a cross, falling to the alert Sam, who smashed the ball towards the net with his left foot and it took a sharp deflection of the Brockham defender a yard out and into the net.

Greens saw out a tense 10 minutes, aided by Brockham going down to 10 players after a straight red for foul and abusive language, but at full time there were scenes of jubilation as Greens won their first ever league title.

Greens attention is now on the South Surrey Trophy Final on 10th May where they seek the double to cap a memorable season to sunset the 10 years coaching partnership of James Mayes and Matt Russell on a high. See you at Meadowbank Stadium for a 09:30 KO!
