A very cold start saw the U14's take on second place Partridge Green at Westhumble. The U14's started fast but it was nip and tuck for the first 10 minutes as the snow started to fall. Thrusting runs down the right and left from Hodgson and Smith were a promising start but Partridge were also creating space with their own well worked moves. Their pressure led to a central free kick brilliantly saved by McBride. The resulting corner was expertly nodded away by Wallace and worked at breakneck speed down the left by Down and Smith. A perfect cross to the back post was slotted home by Goff, on 20 minutes, who had put the leg work in to get up with play.
Partridge Green continued to play attractive passing football going forward and defended physically throughout. A great first time strike saw the ball arrow into the far corner from a ball that squirmed free from a tackle and it was 1-1. It stayed all square until the break.
The second half saw Dorkinians falter and lose two goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half, slick passing created space and a decent through ball saw the Partridge striker guide the ball home to complete a very good goal. The second came from a poorly defended free kick that saw any number of opposition players have the chance to score and one of them duly did.
Heads had dropped a bit prior to the third goal but going 3-1 behind seemed to galvanise the U14's and slowly but surely they started to apply some pressure. A well struck free kick by Wallace from the edge of the box brought a good save from the Partridge keeper and our midfield started to win the 50-50 balls. However it was not until the 65 minute that Downs, having had a 10 minute break on the touchline, galloped away from the impressive Partridge central defender and fire the ball across the keeper into the net. With 5 minutes left Dorkinians threw caution to the wind and went on all out attack, continuing pressure saw the ball well worked up the field and into the opposing penalty box, a possible penalty wasn't given but possession was retained and first time captain Oram dinked the ball beautifully up and over the keeper and into the net.
There was still time for a Partridge Green free kick but Dorkinians managed to defend it this time and got their just desserts for a very good last 20 minutes to the game. Wallace was deemed player of the week but there were several excellent performances.
Thanks for parental support which was the coldest home game to date!!
