A great performance saw Dorkinians U14's inflict a first league defeat of the season on Horsham Sparrows.
The Under 14's bounced back from a lacklustre home defeat turning in a controlled and fully committed effort. The game was played at Westhumble due to the Horsham venue being waterlogged and it saw a great turn out of supporters cheering the lads on.
The game started fast and the home side were lucky not to be a goal down in the first minute as it immediately became clear that their frontman was fast and had great off the ball movement, running onto a smart through ball that he couldn't convert. It was a wake up call which seemed to set the tone for the effort that Dorkinians showed for the next 70 minutes, every ball was contested, and nearly every move had purpose and intent.
It wasn't long before chances were appearing for Dorking. In the eighthteenth minute Hersey the Dorkinians right back beat his man threading a great through ball to Hodgson who sprinted clear to the byline crossing the ball to Downs who smashed it goalward. The ball was parried by the keeper but Smith was on hand to slot the rebound. Sparrows continued to find good possession but the Dorkinians back line held strong with great defensive tackles from Hersey and a controlled display of defensive headers and clearances. Rivolta, Kinsey, and new team member Oram held their own throughout the first half in midfield.
The second half brought a continued effort of controlled passing and sensible decision making. The under 14's looked solid and worked as a team throughout the match and when Hodgson was again set free down the right this time he got in behind the Sparrows defence and smashed the ball across their keeper in the net.
Sparrows seemed a bit shellshocked having scored 27 goals in their previous 5 league games and having conceded only 5 goals themselves all season. They did however up their game and had several good chances to get on the score sheet but the ball just wouldn't fall for them and when it did last ditch Dorkinians tackles or good goalkeeping kept them at bay.
They threw men forward increasingly leaving space at the back for Dorkinians to exploit and it was this effort to get back into the game that ultimately led to the final goal. A long through ball dissected a depleted defence and Downs galloped away and consumately placed the ball in the top corner. There was still time for Sparrows to create at least two more good chances but it wasn't to be their day and Dorkinians finished comfortable winners with a 3-0 win. A great result for them and showing their ability to defend as a team against a strong opposition.
Great support and great effort from all the boys before the Christmas break.
