Robins Wings Clipped
A Smith brace sees Dorkinians U14's first win of the season
A Smith brace sees Dorkinian U14's first win of the season.
A frosty start at Westhumble saw the U14's kick start their season with a sprint start. The U14's were first into their stride and quick to apply pressure on Roffey Robins who had beaten us at their ground earlier in the season and were a couple of places ahead of Dorkinians in the league. The first real chance of the match saw a cascade of shots saved but Theo Downs was first on the scene to confidently slot a rebound to make it 1-0 after 5 minutes.
The Robins confidence took a knock and Dorkinians started to play some free flowing football, working the ball well down both flanks and winning the mid field battles. Smith was particularly successful down the left wing and Hodgson speed was a constant threat down the right. It was Smith that grabbed the second slotting home from close range after another period of sustained pressure in the 20th minute.
Long throws from the Robins centre back were a constant threat and they continued to battle leading to several chances that were smothered by McBride sprinting off his line. The Dorkinians back four continued to display real discipline closing down the opposition and minimising Robins chances. Hersey in particular, playing out of position at right back, caught the eye with his tackling and passing display. In the 30th minute Smith again sprinted free down the left cut in field and blasted the ball into the far top corner of the net to make it 3-0 with 5 minutes to half time. Robins brought on their top scorer in response to this goal. To their credit Robins continued to push and with the last kick of the first half broke free down the left and the super fast sub grabbed a goal.
This was the lifeline that Robins needed as they regrouped at half time. Dorkinians dropped their speedy right winger, Hodgeson into defence to counter Robins new striker. The second half was nip and tuck with good chances being created by both sides with several great defensive tackles from the Robins centre back keeping them in the game. The Robins front man continued to cause problems but Dorkinians were equal to everything thrown at them. It took a fantastic goal to set up a frantic finish to the game with Robins left winger striking a humdinger from outside of the box off the cross bar and into the back of the net.
Dorkinians responded demonstrating huge determination to defend their lead through the remainder of the game and continued to create chances time and again but not converting any of them. The final whistle came and Dorkinians secured a well deserved first league win of the season. A good display from the whole team with Smith in particular standing out and securing player of match.
Congratulations to the whole team, a great effort.
